Retro Road Maps: 1960s Enco California and Nevada Road Map
Humble Oil & Refining Co Road Map
This road map was distributed in the mid- to late 1960s by filling stations operating under the Enco name. They were a subsidiary owned by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. Although their logo has a striking resemblance to the Esso logo, they were not the same company, but rather Enco and Esso were both subsidiaries of Humble Oil. The similarity in logos and names lead Esso to demand that Enco discontinue use of their name. Humble Oil’s solution was to take Enco to states where Esso did not have a presence, like California.
Both the front and the back of this road map are very similar. One side shows illustrations of sightseeing locations in California, the other, in Nevada. Both sides also feature the Enco Oil Drop Man known as “Happy”.
