Read the retro history of toilet paper…

A recent quest on squidoo left us hunting for a unique “national” day that also had a rich, retro history. That’s how we found out that August 26th is “Toilet Paper Day”!

We discovered quite a few interesting things about this day-to-day necessity, including that someone obtained a patent on the stuff with an accompanying dispenser, and that in the early years it was marketed as “medicated”.

It was the ’50s and ’60s, though, where manufacturers gained a whole new level of competition: the introduction of toilet paper as part of home design. This is when pastel-colored tissue was most popular, and good chunks of change were spent on marketing toilet paper as more than just a staple – it became fun to accessorize in the bathroom!
