Perhaps you’ve seen the limited edition Birthday Cake Oreo cookies in your local supermarket lately. (If you haven’t tried them, I recommend it. They really do taste just like a birthday cake!) These yummy treats have been issued to celebrate the 100th birthday of the classic Oreo Cookie. Yes, the delicious chocolate cookie with the cream center has been around since 1912! The actual 100th birthday of the Oreo Cookie is to be celebrated on March 6th.

Oreos were created by Nabisco, which was started in 1898 when a group of baking companies joined together and formed the National Biscuit Company. The corporate headquarters were based in New York City, but the consolidated companies resulted in 114 bakeries across America. The company name was changed to Nabisco in 1971.

First introduced as the Oreo Biscuit, the cookie was also known in later years as the Oreo Sandwich (starting in 1921), Oreo Crème Sandwich (1948) and in 1974 as the Oreo Chocolate Cookie Sandwich. Today the packaging is testament to the very strong product identity of the cookie by simply stating Oreo on the wrapper. The Oreo cookie packages also bear the slogan, “Milk’s Favorite Cookie”, since Oreos are the preferred cookie for dipping into a glass of milk. They also have the distinction as the best selling cookie in America. They’ve been a part of nearly every childhood in America and today they are sold and enjoyed worldwide.
