A Retro Meatball Recipe with a Twist

This recipe comes from the “Downright Delicious Sun-Maid Raisin Recipes” book. This edition was printed around 1955, but Heinz has been providing booklets of raisin recipes since 1910. All you had to do to get one of these was to cut the coupon from a magazine, such as “Life” and mail it in for your free booklet. This recipe may sound a little unconventional to our tastebuds today and a little high in saturated fat for health-conscious people, but it’s a fun idea. We wonder if anyone has ever had this?

Raisin Sauce with Meat Balls

Sauce:
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/3 cup chopped green pepper
1/3 cup chopped celery
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tablespoons bacon drippings
½ cup Sun-Maid Raisins
1/3 cup Heinz Tomato Ketchup
1 tablespoon Heinz Cider Vinegar
1 cup water
Dash salt, pepper

Sauté first 4 ingredients in bacon drippings for about 5 minutes. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer for 20 to 30 min. Serve over meatballs.

Meatballs:
1 lb. ground lean beef, veal or lamb
1 medium onion, minced
1 cup dry bread crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 egg, beaten
½ cup milk

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Shape into meatballs and cook thoroughly in hot drippings in skillet. Serve topped with raisin sauce.

Serves 6.
