Post-WWII America and its people enjoyed unprecedented renewal and economic growth. Many people were delighted to find that they had disposable income after the meager wartime rationing and shortages. This meant they were able to spend money to beautify their homes, and this included purchasing stylish kitchen linens. And yet, people had not completely forgotten thrift and the value of making things last. Many a frugal housewife knew that the best way to protect a beautiful table was to cover it. And it still is. Development of new chemical processes during WWII have lived on in some very mundane uses, such as the creation of vinyl that is used to make oilcloth table cloths.
