Retro College Style: Decor & Accessories
Lighting, Accessories and Gadgets
Retro Planet’s resident college student, Amanda, talks about this year’s top picks for dorm room decor.
When you enter college, you’re given a blank slate, wiped clean of high school cliches and social hierarchies. This slate is ready to be filled with new opportunities, friends, and adventures. But before you can experience all that, you need to transform that dingy, questionably sanitary dorm room into a comfortable, creative place that will become your base for relaxing, studying, snacking, and let’s not forget… partying. No matter who you are, there’s something unique that will reflect your personal style.
Tech geek? Don’t fret. There are lots of nerdy essentials to digitize your dorm, including (but not limited to) the iClassic iPhone Docking Station, Battery Salt and Pepper Shakers, Walking Robot Pencil Sharpener, and Camera Print Bag (to hold all the little things). The inflatable chair and ottoman is perfect for gaming, and a great space-saver too.
Gals, check out the Lace Table Lamp and Flower Power Desk Lamp, or the essential Breakfast At Tiffany’s and The Breakfast Club movie posters to decorate your desk and walls. The Glee Polka Dots and Retro Owl accent rugs are great ways to cover up an ugly or worn-out dorm rug or cold tile floor – since these rugs are machine washable, they’ll last your college career.
If you’re tired of the same old backpack, opt for a fun and colorful retro tote or messenger bag, like the Hershey’s Chocolate Bar Bag or the I Love Men In Uniform Superhero Tote. And don’t forget to make your bed comfy and cute with accessories like pillows (I like the Zebra Pillow and the colorful Peace Sign Accent Pillow).
If partying, err, studying with friends, is your prerogative, check out the unique ice cube molds and shot glasses, like the Batman Ice Cube Tray or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shot Glass Set. To keep beverages cold, look no further than one of the Coca-Cola Mini Fridges. Don’t forget the bottle opener! Finally, be a good host and serve your guests some snacks like Smarties, Twizzlers, Gummy Bears, or any other candy from this vast confection collection.
If music by Kanye or Nicki Minaj is banned from your dorm, you should take a look at classic rock posters and LED signs (like this one of Led Zeppelin). Yes, Elvis, Pink Floyd and ACDC are retro hot! If you enjoy a more classic sound, complete the look with a vinyl turntable, or the record player shoulder bag to carry around your headphones, laptop, and books.
Upperclassmen, I didn’t forget you! There’s some great items to complete your apartment-style dorm as well, including shower curtains (the Rubber Duck and Fish Bowl Curtains are my favorites) and bath rugs to cereal bowls (the Washable “Paper” Bowls are so neat!), salt and pepper shakers and seating.
Of course, it’s about taste and style. So make sure your dorm living space is comfortable enough for studies, sleep and having fun! Want more ideas? Visit the Retro Dorm Room Decor section at Retro Planet for lots of inspiration.
