Retro Tiki Cocktail: The Zombie
Classic Zombie Recipe
The Zombie cocktail is a combination of fruit juices and rums. Rumor has it the Zombie got its name because consuming a few will make you feel like a zombie. The original creation, made by Donn Beach of the Beachcomber restaurants fame, contained 7.5 ounces of alcohol. (A typical cocktails contain 2 ounces!) The drink has a smooth fruit taste that conceals the potent kick that will be delivered from the considerable amount of alcohol.
Donn Beach originally kept his recipe for the Zombie a secret. Due to the demand for the drink, his imitators attempted to make their own versions, usually getting poor results. Today many variations on the drink exist. We’ve presented one here that you may want to try.
½ ounce Bacardi 151 rum
1 ounce pineapple juice
1 ounce orange juice
½ ounce apricot brandy
1 teaspoon sugar
2 ounces light rum
1 ounce dark rum
1 ounce lime juice
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice except Bacardi rum. Shake well. Strain into a tall Tiki mug. Float Bacardi rum on top of drink. Garnish with fresh fruit and/or a sprig of mint.
For an authentic Tiki vibe, serve this drink up in a ceramic skull mug – which would also work for a Caribbean shindig with a pirate theme.
