Unique Retro Gifts: Candy Cigarettes

Candy Cigarettes: MachismoSet aside all the controversy about candy cigarettes. These classic sweets were quite popular in the 20th century. Unfortunately, the taste left more to be desired – chalky sugar, bubblegum and chocolate were common flavors.

The controversy was over the packaging (most resembled real cigarette packs) and the tips (often painted red or orange). Candy cigarettes are actually banned in many countries, and in the US, North Dakota banned them from 1953 to 1967.

But, nothing’s going to change history. Today, these candy sticks are still popular amongst those who ate them as a kid, as well as recent quitters of the real thing.

Nowadays, the chalkiness is gone, and orange has taken its place. “Duplicate” packaging of real brands has been replaced by retro inspired artwork. The target audience is adults that have an appreciation for retro candy with a satirical twist. (Though we’ve also heard people give these to loved ones who smoke as a nudge to quit).
